Artist Spotlight: Diane Best
Diane Best is the featured artist for the inaugural Shay’s Warriors I AM HOPE: Life After Cancer Retreat at The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage. The installation is curated by Constance Bloom of C. Bloom Design and That Gallery, featuring a selection of Best’s Other Worlds series as the artistic centerpiece of an immersive environment created to support healing, reflection, and renewal. Best’s atmospheric landscapes—exploring themes of resilience, transformation, and the restorative power of nature—beautifully complement the retreat’s mission, inviting guests into contemplative spaces where art, hope, and healing converge.

Diane Best was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and studied in the San Francisco area at Stanford University and the San Francisco Art Institute before moving to Los Angeles. There, she developed a successful career creating commercial artwork for the entertainment industry and commissioned portraiture, while continuing to exhibit her independent work.
In 1995, Best relocated to Joshua Tree, California, where her practice underwent a decisive shift. Immersed in the Mojave Desert, she began focusing on the dramatic intensity of the landscape through painting, photography, and moving-image work.
Seeking out remote and uninhabited terrain, her work captures fleeting moments of converging light and land—reflecting a deep commitment to both preservation and direct experience.
Working in the lineage of 19th-century American conservationist artists, Best brings a contemporary lens to landscape painting and filmmaking, informed by photography, cinema, digital imaging, animation, and theories of perception rooted in deep ecology.
After more than two decades exploring the deserts of the American Southwest, Best expanded her focus to the polar regions, traveling to Iceland, Greenland, South Georgia Island, and Antarctica. She identifies a profound connection between these “hot” and “cold” deserts—environments defined by vast scale, minimal human presence, and an overwhelming, often disquieting beauty that informs her emotionally resonant landscapes.
Her recent body of work, Other Worlds, marks a further evolution. Created during a period of personal and global upheaval, the series draws from memory, imagination, and limited returns to the desert as she navigates ongoing health challenges. These paintings move beyond direct observation into immersive, atmospheric spaces that merge external landscape with internal experience—inviting viewers into contemplative environments that are at once familiar and unbound by place.
Best has also been profiled in publications including Lifescapes: West Coast Art & Design, Palm Springs Life Art & Culture Magazine, Art Patron Magazine, and Telluride Inside, and was the subject of a KCET Artbound documentary (PBS Los Angeles). In 2020, she was selected as a Joshua Tree National Park Artist representing the U.S. Park Pass program.

Art Advisory
Finding the art is only the beginning.
Choosing art is deeply personal. But creating a collection—and understanding how artwork should live within a space—requires more than simply finding something you love.
That Gallery offers personalized art advisory and curatorial services for homeowners, collectors, interior designers, hospitality projects and businesses.
Led by interior designer, art advisor and curator Constance Bloom, our approach considers both the artwork and the environment in which it will live: architecture, scale, proportion, sight lines, lighting, furnishings, color and placement.
We can help with one extraordinary piece or an entire collection, from initial concept and sourcing through framing, placement and installation.

From Art to Installation
Our involvement can begin wherever you need us.
Perhaps you’ve fallen in love with a particular artist. Perhaps you’re building a collection over time. Perhaps you own wonderful artwork that isn’t working in your current home. Or perhaps you simply have a wall, a room, or an entire property that needs something—and you don’t know what that something is yet.
We help define the direction, source the work, coordinate the details and consider how each piece relates to the larger environment.
Because the goal isn’t simply to buy art.
It’s to live beautifully with it.
Trade & Professional Services
That Gallery works with interior designers, architects, real estate professionals, developers and hospitality clients who need an experienced art resource for their projects.
We can collaborate as much—or as little—as the project requires, from sourcing a single statement piece to developing an art program for an entire residence or commercial space.
Services may include artwork sourcing, artist research, commissions, collection development, budgeting, scale and placement consultation, framing, installation coordination and access to artists and works beyond those represented on our website.
Have a project in mind? Contact us to discuss trade and professional collaboration.
Consignment & Collection Services
Sometimes the challenge isn’t finding art. It’s figuring out what to do with the art you already have.
That Gallery assists homeowners, collectors, designers and real estate professionals with existing collections—including artwork acquired with a home, inherited collections, downsizing and pieces that simply no longer work for the space.
We can help evaluate and edit a collection, identify works that may be appropriate for resale or consignment, recommend repositioning or reframing pieces worth keeping, and coordinate appropriate next steps for works being sold.
Not every piece will have a viable secondary market, and we believe in being straightforward about that.
For works we accept for consignment, terms and commissions are established individually based on the artwork and scope involved.
