Collection: Ivan Butorac

Ivan Butorac is a Los Angeles and Palm Springs–based contemporary artist whose work explores the space between abstraction and representation, geometry and emotion, meaning and ambiguity.

Butorac’s love of art began at an early age. Growing up with parents who were both established artists, he was surrounded by art and creativity and became fascinated by the ability of color and form to affect human emotion and mood. Always experimenting across different media, he studied acting at the Arts Academy in Belgrade before continuing to develop his visual practice. In 2014, he spent a year working in Brooklyn with artist Saint Clair Cemin, an experience that further shaped his artistic development.

Butorac is less interested in delivering a specific message than in creating an experience and posing questions: What does this look like? Does it remind me of something? How does it make me feel? Above all, his work seeks to evoke a sense of wonder.

“Art is about creating a space for the viewer. It is the discovery of one’s own possibilities. It’s about freedom, self-expression, following your interests and going beyond the rational mind. I am interested in bringing light into the world.” — Ivan Butorac
